Today we went on a "field trip" with our teachers. The niece of one of our teachers turned 7 months old today and it is tradition here to have a party when a baby turns 7 months old. We were very excited to go because that meant no school and a baby to play with.
This is a picture of Fili and she was quite the entertainer. She seemed to enjoy all of the people at her party until the traditional part started. First, she had to sit on a plate of sticky rice and pick an object off of a tray. Each object represented her future. She picked a Bible, money and a book which should mean that she will pray a lot, be rich and be smart. Only time will tell...
The next obstacle for Fili to overcome was being put in a cage. Actually it was a chicken coop that was decorated for this special day. Bird flu anyone?
It was a great experience for us, we really enjoyed learning more about the culture we are living in and we were able to get to know our teachers a little better. And we decided that we really, really like little babies from here...
Today we also were able to start doing some real work. We went with a team of nationals to a government hospital to talk with people. Roger had a very good time and we were encouraged because he was able to share with one man!
I had a much different experience. I went to the children's part of the hospital where I saw very sick babies. One of them, Ahtal, was only four months old, but had lost so much weight because of diarrhea that his skin was sagging. While talking with his mother and grandmother we found out that his father had died the week before.
After spending the morning celebrating Fili it was a shock to see a family that was hurting like Ahtal's.
